This year’s big blockbuster release of new remake “Great Gatsby” by Baz Luhrmann has everyone buzzing around. Starting Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby and Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan. This movie has taken five long years to make and finally was released in UK on May 17th, 2013.
Many of you have already went to see this move. I went to see the movie last week. I have mixed feelings about the movie. I like Leonardo DiCaprio, but I think he is a better actor when it comes to more different roles. I loved him in Blood Diamond, Inception, or Django Unchained. I don’t like him very much in romantic roles, it reminded me too much of Titanic. I also found music choice a bit strange. Jay-Z did most of the soundtracks and at one point they even played Flux Pavilion‘s “I Can’t Stop” ( I love that track by the way), but considering that the movie takes place in the 20’s, music felt out-of-place. Over all the movie was good. The whole time while I was watching it, I kept thinking how much fun it must have been to live during the roaring 20’s and how I would love to attend those lavish parties at Mr Gatsby’s Mansion.
The Great Gatsby is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922.
This book was first made in to a movie in 1974.
Then and Now, The differences between the two movies.
Budget
In 1974 the movie cost $6.5 million to make and grossed back a healthy $26.5 million, which was excellent for that time.
Present day Great Gatsby movie cost a whooping $126 million.
In 1974 the leading roles played Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.
Music
Present day Gatsby soundtrack includes 17 times Grammy winner Jay-Z, which features his own tack ” Church In The Wild”
Then Nelson Riddle won Oscar for his Twentieth Style original score, whose highlights was a version of Irving Berlin’s ” What’ll I Do?”
Costumes
I loved the clothes and the jeweller. 20’s are my favourite decade when it comes to fashion. Jewellery in the movie was made by Tiffany & CO.
Present day Gatsby costumes are a collaboration between Luhhrmann’s wife Catherine Martin and Miuccia Prada. They designed 40 outfits adapted from past Prada and Miu Miu designs.
In 1974 costumes were designed by a Greek Designer Theoni Aldredge who won the Best Costume Design Oscar for her clothes.
